The Dakota City Volunteer Fire Department, has a long and a very proud history. The Department was organized in the early 1920's. Prior to the organization of the department, anyone who was available would answer the fire bell, including older male students from the high school.
On February 7, 1927, the size of the department that had been 7 members increased to 24 members. In late 1929, the City agreed to purchase a 1930 Ford truck, this being the first motorized vehicle in the department. This truck was restored by the department in 1979 and is still on display at the Fire Department. Prior to the purchasing the Fire Truck the only equipment the department had was hand pushed hose carts.
In the 1950, Dakota Covington Fire District was formed and reached an agreement with the City of Dakota City, the rural district would take over and maintain all the fire equipment and the City of Dakota City would make available rescue service to the rural district. This agreement is still in place today. The Dakota City Fire Department is an all-volunteer fire department.
The Fire Department take pride in it's unique abilty to provide fire protection, rescue service, and emergency medical services to the Dakota Covington Rural Fire District. This district encompassess the City of Jackson, and a major portion of Dakota County and the Tyson Industiral area.
